Stonebaked Margherita Pizza from Tescos Review

A stonebaked Pizza base topped with sweet Tomato sauce, Mozzarella full fat soft Cheese and Regato medium fat hard Cheese and basil sauce.

The Stonebaked Margherita Pizza Review

The Pizza Lads had been spending money like it’s going out of fashion on football and Pizza. The missuses were getting a bit angry and as our marriages were on the rocks, so we agreed we had to go on an economy drive as a matter of urgency. Cut backs and belt tightening were the order of the day. So instead of the usual delights from one of our favorite Pizza restaurant’s like Pizza Hut, we had to settle for a supermarket takeaway pizza.

Now were not snobs by any means so as long it’s a pizza that’ll do for us.

Bill said “we ought to start with the most basic one we could find” A classic Stonebaked Margherita it was then. The pizza was duly cooked which is always hit and miss at home as the edges are usually burnt and the middle cold. But using the Lets Cook Pizza Tray we reviewed recently the results were pretty good.

The offering had a reasonable base, the Stonebaked base was a little dry but not to chewy and had crisped nicely underneath. The Mozzarella full fat soft Cheese and Regato were a decent mix and seemed to have been generously piled on. The sweet Tomato and Basil sauce added a nice tangy kick which lifted the whole taste. Not much more to say really but sometimes the most basic Pizza can be awesome and we felt this like lacked some herbs to give it a more indulgent combo.

Did it match the pizza chains ones?
We have to say it was close and as for the price, we were happy and so were the wives. Marriage saved for now …

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads…

The Chicken Tops Pizza Review

The Lads were off to follow their football team down south again, so we made a point of looking for a Tops Pizza restaurant after we had a good experience before. The missuses were getting fed up with us disappearing all the time and our marriages were hanging by a thread. But as Bill always says “if they don’t like it, they know what they do”. With these words of wisdom guiding our actions we were off out the door (never knowing if we were going to get back in!).

Anyway enough personal stuff, we arrived early for the game and located the Tops Pizza branch. Ted was to make the Pizza choice as he had won the coin toss. He decided to go for the Chicken Tops on a Hot Dog Crust base. I’ll let him have this one, as we normally just have a plain base so we can judge the toppings better.

So pizza arrived freshly cooked and looking lovely, the Hot Dog Crust was pretty OK as it provided a nice contrast with the Chicken, it sometimes doesn’t work with very meat intensive toppings. The special Tomato sauce was rich and full of flavour. The Chicken pieces were small but tasty and tender and contrasted with the sweet and tender Sweetcorn. Finished off with a good helping of Mushrooms and Green Pepper. A perfect Chicken Pizza experience. We were on cloud nine until we went and lost at the football and the thought of the nagging we were going to face when we returned home. Back to reality…

Tops mozzarella cheese, Special tomato sauce, Peri Peri Chicken, Chorizo, Roquito Peppers, Red Onions & Fresh Tomato

The Peri Peri Lover Pizza Review

The Tops Pizza Chain was a new one to the lads as Midland based dudes as it’s based mainly down in London and the south.

We had been allowed by the missuses to go and watch a footie match down in London and hey were out and about so Pizza before the game was a must. So we spotted a Tops Pizza outlet and we were in our zone. So how would it compare to the larger chains? Here goes…

We choose the Peri Peri Lover on a deep pan base. The base was excellent and tasted really fresh and had just the right amount of crispy and chewiness. The special tomato sauce was rich and thick and had a tangy taste. The main act was of course the Peri Peri Chicken and we have to say it was Nando quality in our opinion, tender and had a real kick to it. The Chorizo always goes well with chicken and gives a lovely contrast. Forgot to mention the Cheese which was nothing out the ordinary but good. The Peppers and Onions added indulged the flavour of the Chicken. Finally there was a good helping of fresh Tomato, chunky and fresh and really topped things off a treat.

So is Tops The Tops? It was excellent and we really hope they expand across the UK , but next time we see one we shall visit without a doubt.

5 stars and a massive thumbs up from The Pizza Lads

Great British BBQ Pizza from Papa John’s

Great British BBQ Pizza from Papa John's Review

Great British BBQ Pizza from Papa John’s Review

Make it a British summer to savour with this BBQ sensation, which is first loaded with our signature BBQ sauce, then topped with prime cuts of slow cooked, marinated BBQ beef, which is torn into rustic shreds and mixed with a sweet & sticky Old Kentucky whiskey glaze, juicy chargrilled chicken, spicy beef, pork sausage & onions.

Papa John’s Great British BBQ Pizza Review
The lads and the missuses were enjoying the lovely summer weather, but Bills wife decided that the BBQ had to fired up so that they could get out of cooking no doubt. Anyway me and Bill were not too happy about this. All the work and waiting about and expense of the burgers and stuff. So we remembered that Papa John’s were offering a new Great British BBQ Pizza. To all round groans from the wives they eventually gave in so we headed own to Papas John’s.

The Base we choose was the thin crust XXL so enough for all (especially us). The base is decent, not too crusty though a bit floppy to the size (we know the feeling !).

A good coating of BBQ sauce which we prefer to tomato on meaty offerings. It was fairly sweet but tangy, so all good. The pulled beef was indeed tender as promised and mixed with a sweet & sticky Old Kentucky whiskey glaze, which was really good. The whiskey taste wasn’t strong but gave the beef a deep luxurious flavour. The Chicken was moist and and full of flavour. Spicy beef was something we wouldn’t have added as it didn’t add much to the overall taste.

Finally the pork sausage & onions gave a nice contrast to the pizza and the onions seemed to take away a bit of the sweetness. So all very nice and work free for us. Was it better than a real BBQ? We thought it was a good try, however the wives were not as pleased, but hey they didn’t eat much, so all the more for us! Winner Winner BBQ dinner.

Margherita Bufala from Pizza Express

Margherita Bufala from Pizza Express Review

Margherita Bufala from Pizza Express Review

Buffalo mozzarella, tomato, fresh basil, fresh tomato, garlic oil, and oregano, finished with fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil.

Carbonara Pizza Review The Margherita Pizza Review
The lads are always intrigued by the strange sounding names that pizza express gives to the Pizzas, usually they are fairly standard in a way, but sound more exotic and perhaps justify the higher price point.

Now we are fans of Pizza Express offerings in general, so we decided to throw caution to the wind and pick a odd sounding one on our visit with looking at the picture or ingredients. So Ted took the lead and closed his eyes a bit and settled on the Margherita Bufala. Cool whats Bufala? Sounds like an insult from Bills misses! So ordering said Pizza and checking Google we discovered that its Italian for Buffalo Mozzarella or “Mozzarella di Bufala”.

Another mystery solved but hey we could have guessed from the ingredients. It turned up promptly and to be honest, looked like it had been left out in the garden on a windy day and leaves had landed all over it. So on to the base – all good and a nice texture and well cooked without being hard. The Cheese was decent and spiced up with fresh Basil, Garlic oil, and Oregano. We thought the Oregano was a bit overdone and took over a bit.

The Tomatoes were small and sharp and we would have preferred big slices of Beef Tomatoes. To be honest we were not big fans of the leaves either. They were a bit chewy for our liking. So all in all, not the best Pizza we have ever had.

It was OK but not something the we would rush back for. The Pizza Lads…

Epic Pepperoni Pizza from Pizza Hut Review

Discover Pizza that’s a long way away from the same-old, same-old. We’ve taken our famous favourites, and remastered them with a premium flavour boost. Triple Cheese, Pepperoni & Chorizo.

Pizza Hut The Epic Pepperoni Pizza Review
It’s hot hot hot, the summer grinds on and tempers were frayed. The lads and the missuses were fighting like cats and dogs all the time. Ted was Googling to find out how dudes in hot countries kept cool and it seems they eat hot spicy food, we mentioned this to the wives and they virtually threw us out the door to “cool down” at the local Pizza Hut. Yo-Hoo, we had permission to indulge ourselves.

So off we went to scan the menu, Ted hadn’t had much Pepperoni lately and we agreed that the Epic Pepperoni Pizza was going to fit the bill. Duly served up fresh we opted for the pan base with is deep with crispy edges and a fluffy insides. Tomato sauce check. Triple Cheese which are Mozzarella, Monterey Jack and Red Leicester, this is a good combination and we particularly like the Monterey Jack which adds an indulgent twist.

The pepperoni and Chorizo gave us the spice and heat we needed to “cool down”. The Chorizo had a great texture as well, so a great traditional combo with a twist to lift it out from the ordinary and it looked great to be honest. Perhaps we should have gone for a more spicy option really but it was just enough. Right, back home for more fun and games!

Sicilia Pizza from Domino’s Pizza Review

Chicken Breast Strips, Cajun Seasoning, Red Onions & Pepper Pearls for a hot & sweet kick, served with our exclusive Chilli Oil.

Domino’s Sicilia Pizza Review
The lads had a succession of very meaty based Pizzas of late and to be honest we felt like we needed a change. Veggie Pizzas are all good but Chicken really hits the mark. Scanning our menus we settled upon the Sicilia from Domino’s Pizza. It’s part of the Italiano range which is a thinner, hand-stretched base which we think is a bit tougher and chewy than the standard. However this is the more authentic taste.

Usual decent cheese and tomato base. On to the toppings, Chicken breast, it’s got Cajun spices, it’s got pepper pearls and red onions. The Chicken breast was juicy and tender and the Cajun spices added a kick. The pepper pearls were not too hot really and worked very well. The lads felt that some mushrooms would have set things off a bit more, but we only review the standard menu items as they will be served to you.

Finocchiona, Coppa, Milano Salami, Pancetta, Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella, finished with rocket and shaved Gran Milano Cheese on a classic base.

The Quattro Carni Pizza Review The lads were intrigued by the Pizza Express menu the last time we visited as the toppings seemed to have unusual names, last time it was Barbacoa. We also happened to notice the Quattro Carni Pizza which has Finocchiona and Coppa! We had no idea so vowed to come back and try it.

So giving the missuses the slip one day we found the opportunity. We had decided to Google these mystery toppings before we left and we discovered that Finocchiona is Pork Salami. Right OK, Coppa is Pork Collar! We like different, so we went for it. The pizza base was good and tasty as usual but would all the Pork’s work together? We are pleased to report that the combo was a real treat with subtle differences between the various types.

The Finocchiona has the taste of Fennel seeds, produce an intriguing sweet, anise flavor. The Coppa was quite fatty but tender. Milano Salami and Pancetta added to overall effect. Finished with rocket and shaved Gran Milano cheese to give a fresh summer looking appearance.

A decent option for Pork loving Pizza fans and a thumbs up from The Pizza Lads…

Barbacoa Pizza from Pizza Express Review

Smoky, spicy and full flavoured with pulled Barbacoa Beef, Spicy Chipotle Salsa, Garlic Oil, Mozzarella and Tomato, with a finish of fresh Tomato, Red Onion and fresh Coriander on a Classic base.

Pizza Express Barbacoa Pizza Review
The Lads had been forced into taking the missuses for a night out at a restaurant. So wanting a quiet life we opted for our local pizza express, so we could indulge in our pizza passion and they could have something else, they were keen on the Lasagne (but more of that later) Anyway on to the business in hand, we were confronted with a wide array of choice but as always we feel the need to bring you our view of the new options.

So the Barbacoa sounded different indeed and it was new. I (Ted) asked what Barbacoa was and none of us knew, so Bill got his phone out and checked on Wikipedia .. it says it’s “barbecue”.. So mystery solved. The base was just the standard classic, but no complaints from us on that. Cheese & Tomato checked all good. Now the toppings – Barbacoa Beef was tasty and we found it really full of flavour, a little greasy for our taste but a good and strong offering.

The Chipotle Salsa really had a kick to it with a faint hint of the Garlic Oil coming though. The fresh Tomato, Red Onion and fresh Coriander made this a busy looking Pizza, but just took the edge off the meats and enhanced the combo. So maybe not a classic but it was pretty okay.

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads Pizza Express Lasagne….!!!

A message from The Pizza Lads Wives, who had the Lasagne and on this occasion wanted to add a few words of their very own… We had the Lasagne from the pasta menu and expected something good as this is Pizza Express who sell their selves as one of the best Pizza Restaurants in the UK. We were very surprised at the dreadful quality of the Lasagne in its presentation and taste. It turned up in a black dish that had obviously just been taking out the microwave.

The Lasagne itself was nothing more than Godawful wishy washy slop. It ran through my fork and i needed a spoon to eat it. Although the Lads Pizza’s were good, Pizza Express need to pay attention to other items on the menu if they are going to continue to offer an alternative.

Epic Meat Feast from Pizza Hut Review

Discover pizza that’s a long way away from the same-old, same-old. We’ve taken our famous favourites, and remastered them with a premium flavour boost. Triple cheese, shaved steak, paprika pulled chicken, pepperoni & ham.

Pizza Hut Epic Meat Feast Pizza Review
The Lads were back for the caravan holiday in Skegness and to be honest we were pretty pleased to have survived it at all, or at least the fact our marriages were still intact. The strain was telling toward the end and only the thought of taste testing the new range of “Epic” Pizzas at Pizza Hut kept us going. Now what is this Epic business about?

The Pizzas were pretty good already. So it seems in a nutshell that triple Cheese is the first change, namely Mozzarella, Monterey Jack and Red Leicester, Does this alone give a return on the 2 pound extra cost? We thought maybe, were all for Monterey Jack as it really is a lively and flavourful Cheese, The Red Leicester adds some body and a nutty taste.

So we thought this made things more indulgent (in a cheese feast sort of way). The base was up to the usual high Pizza Hut standard. The shaved Steak replaced the Beef in the standard Meat Feast and it was an improvement in our view, though maybe a bit more chewy than we would have preferred. The Paprika pulled Chicken replaces the Chicken breast and once again good flavour but maybe a bit chewy.

All rounded off with the good old Pepperoni & Ham. Was it Epic, it was certainly more tasty in our opinion but didn’t add too much, but hey it was only a bit more expensive and on balance we would recommend it!

BBQ Hog Roast Pizza from Papa John’s Review

Deliciously mouth-watering, spit roast style pork shoulder, seasoned with thyme & black pepper with a generous helping of onions and our signature cheese on a unique apple sauce base for a traditional hog roast style experience.

Papa John’s BBQ Hog Roast Pizza Review
Summer is most defiantly here and the lads were on the road for the Yearly Caravan break in Skegness with the missuses and kids. It is truly a time to remember normally, Wailing kids, moaning wives and general misery for us packed into a sardine can size space with toe stubbing obstacles everywhere.

However the benefits are that nobody wants to cook so the wives are quite happy to indulge us in our passion for pizza . The local Papa Johns was near the campsite, so off we went and as usual its our mission to test out the taste combos on offer. Today’s new pizza was the rather great sounding BBQ Hog Roast.

We opted for the thin crust base as the kids prefer it. The ingredients are not too fussy which we like. Cheese as always was lovely and onions go down well, but the star of the show is the Hog Roast pork. Can they pull off that fresh roasted taste? The answer is just about… It was pretty tender and not too chewy with a rich indulgent taste complimented by the thyme and pepper. But the apple sauce base was perhaps a little too sweet for our taste and somehow the cheese and apple mix seemed odd. But it was as a whole a decent combo and a really quite good overall experience. The kids loved it and the wives were quiet so we were on cloud nine. A summer winner!

The Meatfielder Pizza from Domino’s Review

The Pizza Lads love a new pizza combo and a new meaty pizza always floats our boat.

Domino’s Meatfielder Pizza Review
Now Domino’s have no shortage of meat eater etc type combos. Mighty Meaty, Meat Lovers, Meateor and Meatilicious. So what makes this one different. In our opinion not too much but we reckon it’s because it’s all porky type meats and no veggie filler. All good by us, so on to taste test and after a few weeks watching Wimbledon Tennis and world cup football we were looking quite buff.

Even our wives started to notice us, which isn’t all a good thing and a return to our slobby normal selves should solve that dilemma. Now the toppings are Ham, Pepperoni, Chorizo, Smoked Bacon and Pork Meatballs. Nothing extraordinary really but as a whole we were quite taken with it. The  Pepperoni and Chorizo added some real zing to to the proceedings, Ham faded into the background but the texture and look benefited greatly. Meatballs were soft and tasty and the smoky taste of the bacon was a nice counterpoint.

On the usual cheese and tomato base. All good in our opinion and a few more of these and the pounds will soon pile on!

Mozzarella and tomato with black olives, buffalo mozzarella and garlic oil, finished with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese and extra virgin olive oil on a Classic base

Pizza Express Soho 65 Pizza Review The lads had not been that kind to Pizza Express the last time we visited, We had the Vegan option and though passable did not appeal to us.

So in the interest of fairness we revisited our local and choose another option. Now you may be thinking we would go for the safe options. But no, the lads are committed to bringing you all the options so you can make up your mind yourself. Scanning the menu we opted for the Soho 65, not perhaps our traditional taste. The pizza was a “salad garden on a plate” Ted said, when it arrived at our table. The rocket was very much present,

Base and sauce were as usual the fine Pizza Express offering. A few black olives were scattered about to break up the green colour. The two cheeses complimented the rocket nicely and the Garlic and Olive Oil were not not to greasy tasting and to be honest all in all the Pizza as a combination offering worked well. The rocket really standing out with a pleasant mustard taste with a peppery bite. A nice option the lads agreed !

Artichoke, closed cup mushroom, red onion and black olives, with tomato, vegan mozzarella alternative and garlic oil, finished with fresh parsley on a Romana base.

Pizza Express Vegan Giardiniera Pizza Review
Now the lads are real men cavemen meat eaters! But we are married (to our wives lol) who might have a different opinion, so on a double date we popped into pizza express. It was decided for us that a vegan pizza would be in order.

The lads weren’t sure why, but they explained to us that Sarah the new Zumba teacher was a Vegan (we could’ve guessed). So with a tear in our eyes we passed over the meat feast and double pepperoni and focused on the Vegan Giardiniera. The pizza appeared after a brief while and we got stuck in.

The base was Good of course. Toppings wise, well we could live with Mushrooms, tomato and onion. Artichoke and olives would not be top of our list, but it worked together pretty well. Our problem was with the fake mozzarella, it was to our taste a bit Grim. I suppose we could get used to it, but it didn’t float our boats. Ted said it had a funny twang. Luckily the Garlic oil hid some of the taste. So all in all, not one that we would be getting again. Even the wives didn’t argue with that!

Loaded first, is a generous dollop of our signature BBQ sauce. Then a double helping of spicy beef, pickles, sliced tomatoes, onions and cheese, all on a fresh dough base. It’s the mouth-watering taste of a cheeseburger in every bite!

Papa John’s BBQ Cheeseburger Pizza Review
The lads were passing the local Papa John’s after the missuses had sent us out with a shopping list to pick up some healthy option tasteless food from the supermarket, and Ted noticed the new pizza, the BBQ Cheeseburger.

Wow that’s a real guys pizza, no poncy spinach and pan fried shallot rubbish. So sacking off the shopping chore we went we and ordered one. We were on cloud nine not even caring about what would happen when we didn’t get back with the poncy food they wanted.

Now we would have preferred some chopped up beef patties of the Maccy D variety, but this was good. All the ingredients of a burger on a pizza. We thought that tomato sauce base might have been better which of course you could have, but we went with the BBQ sauce.

To be honest we could go though the all the ingredients and say this, that and the could have been better but the combination speaks for itself! And it all worked fantastically. Though in true Maccy D style, Bill picked his pickles out and dumped them on the side.

The Pizza Lads say – A thumbs up and a real winner!

We forgot the shopping and we were not popular when we went home. And we don’t care!
