Barbacoa Pizza from Pizza Express Review

Smoky, spicy and full flavoured with pulled Barbacoa Beef, Spicy Chipotle Salsa, Garlic Oil, Mozzarella and Tomato, with a finish of fresh Tomato, Red Onion and fresh Coriander on a Classic base.

Pizza Express Barbacoa Pizza Review
The Lads had been forced into taking the missuses for a night out at a restaurant. So wanting a quiet life we opted for our local pizza express, so we could indulge in our pizza passion and they could have something else, they were keen on the Lasagne (but more of that later) Anyway on to the business in hand, we were confronted with a wide array of choice but as always we feel the need to bring you our view of the new options.

So the Barbacoa sounded different indeed and it was new. I (Ted) asked what Barbacoa was and none of us knew, so Bill got his phone out and checked on Wikipedia .. it says it’s “barbecue”.. So mystery solved. The base was just the standard classic, but no complaints from us on that. Cheese & Tomato checked all good. Now the toppings – Barbacoa Beef was tasty and we found it really full of flavour, a little greasy for our taste but a good and strong offering.

The Chipotle Salsa really had a kick to it with a faint hint of the Garlic Oil coming though. The fresh Tomato, Red Onion and fresh Coriander made this a busy looking Pizza, but just took the edge off the meats and enhanced the combo. So maybe not a classic but it was pretty okay.

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads Pizza Express Lasagne….!!!

A message from The Pizza Lads Wives, who had the Lasagne and on this occasion wanted to add a few words of their very own… We had the Lasagne from the pasta menu and expected something good as this is Pizza Express who sell their selves as one of the best Pizza Restaurants in the UK. We were very surprised at the dreadful quality of the Lasagne in its presentation and taste. It turned up in a black dish that had obviously just been taking out the microwave.

The Lasagne itself was nothing more than Godawful wishy washy slop. It ran through my fork and i needed a spoon to eat it. Although the Lads Pizza’s were good, Pizza Express need to pay attention to other items on the menu if they are going to continue to offer an alternative.

Epic Meat Feast from Pizza Hut

Epic Meat Feast from Pizza Hut Review

Epic Meat Feast from Pizza Hut Review

Discover pizza that’s a long way away from the same-old, same-old. We’ve taken our famous favourites, and remastered them with a premium flavour boost. Triple cheese, shaved steak, paprika pulled chicken, pepperoni & ham.

Pizza Hut Epic Meat Feast Pizza Review
The Lads were back for the caravan holiday in Skegness and to be honest we were pretty pleased to have survived it at all, or at least the fact our marriages were still intact. The strain was telling toward the end and only the thought of taste testing the new range of “Epic” Pizzas at Pizza Hut kept us going. Now what is this Epic business about?

The Pizzas were pretty good already. So it seems in a nutshell that triple Cheese is the first change, namely Mozzarella, Monterey Jack and Red Leicester, Does this alone give a return on the 2 pound extra cost? We thought maybe, were all for Monterey Jack as it really is a lively and flavourful Cheese, The Red Leicester adds some body and a nutty taste.

So we thought this made things more indulgent (in a cheese feast sort of way). The base was up to the usual high Pizza Hut standard. The shaved Steak replaced the Beef in the standard Meat Feast and it was an improvement in our view, though maybe a bit more chewy than we would have preferred. The Paprika pulled Chicken replaces the Chicken breast and once again good flavour but maybe a bit chewy.

All rounded off with the good old Pepperoni & Ham. Was it Epic, it was certainly more tasty in our opinion but didn’t add too much, but hey it was only a bit more expensive and on balance we would recommend it!

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads…

BBQ Hog Roast Pizza from Papa John’s

BBQ Hog Roast Pizza from Papa John's BBQ Hog Roast review

BBQ Hog Roast Pizza from Papa John’s Review

Deliciously mouth-watering, spit roast style pork shoulder, seasoned with thyme & black pepper with a generous helping of onions and our signature cheese on a unique apple sauce base for a traditional hog roast style experience.

Papa John’s BBQ Hog Roast Pizza Review
Summer is most defiantly here and the lads were on the road for the Yearly Caravan break in Skegness with the missuses and kids. It is truly a time to remember normally, Wailing kids, moaning wives and general misery for us packed into a sardine can size space with toe stubbing obstacles everywhere.

However the benefits are that nobody wants to cook so the wives are quite happy to indulge us in our passion for pizza . The local Papa Johns was near the campsite, so off we went and as usual its our mission to test out the taste combos on offer. Today’s new pizza was the rather great sounding BBQ Hog Roast.

We opted for the thin crust base as the kids prefer it. The ingredients are not too fussy which we like. Cheese as always was lovely and onions go down well, but the star of the show is the Hog Roast pork. Can they pull off that fresh roasted taste? The answer is just about… It was pretty tender and not too chewy with a rich indulgent taste complimented by the thyme and pepper. But the apple sauce base was perhaps a little too sweet for our taste and somehow the cheese and apple mix seemed odd. But it was as a whole a decent combo and a really quite good overall experience. The kids loved it and the wives were quiet so we were on cloud nine. A summer winner!

A big Hog Roast thumbs up from The Pizza Lads…

The Meatfielder Pizza from Domino’s Review

The Pizza Lads love a new pizza combo and a new meaty pizza always floats our boat.

Domino’s Meatfielder Pizza Review
Now Domino’s have no shortage of meat eater etc type combos. Mighty Meaty, Meat Lovers, Meateor and Meatilicious. So what makes this one different. In our opinion not too much but we reckon it’s because it’s all porky type meats and no veggie filler. All good by us, so on to taste test and after a few weeks watching Wimbledon Tennis and world cup football we were looking quite buff.

Even our wives started to notice us, which isn’t all a good thing and a return to our slobby normal selves should solve that dilemma. Now the toppings are Ham, Pepperoni, Chorizo, Smoked Bacon and Pork Meatballs. Nothing extraordinary really but as a whole we were quite taken with it. The  Pepperoni and Chorizo added some real zing to to the proceedings, Ham faded into the background but the texture and look benefited greatly. Meatballs were soft and tasty and the smoky taste of the bacon was a nice counterpoint.

On the usual cheese and tomato base. All good in our opinion and a few more of these and the pounds will soon pile on!

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads

Mozzarella and tomato with black olives, buffalo mozzarella and garlic oil, finished with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese and extra virgin olive oil on a Classic base

Pizza Express Soho 65 Pizza Review The lads had not been that kind to Pizza Express the last time we visited, We had the Vegan option and though passable did not appeal to us.

So in the interest of fairness we revisited our local and choose another option. Now you may be thinking we would go for the safe options. But no, the lads are committed to bringing you all the options so you can make up your mind yourself. Scanning the menu we opted for the Soho 65, not perhaps our traditional taste. The pizza was a “salad garden on a plate” Ted said, when it arrived at our table. The rocket was very much present,

Base and sauce were as usual the fine Pizza Express offering. A few black olives were scattered about to break up the green colour. The two cheeses complimented the rocket nicely and the Garlic and Olive Oil were not not to greasy tasting and to be honest all in all the Pizza as a combination offering worked well. The rocket really standing out with a pleasant mustard taste with a peppery bite. A nice option the lads agreed !

Artichoke, closed cup mushroom, red onion and black olives, with tomato, vegan mozzarella alternative and garlic oil, finished with fresh parsley on a Romana base.

Pizza Express Vegan Giardiniera Pizza Review
Now the lads are real men cavemen meat eaters! But we are married (to our wives lol) who might have a different opinion, so on a double date we popped into pizza express. It was decided for us that a vegan pizza would be in order.

The lads weren’t sure why, but they explained to us that Sarah the new Zumba teacher was a Vegan (we could’ve guessed). So with a tear in our eyes we passed over the meat feast and double pepperoni and focused on the Vegan Giardiniera. The pizza appeared after a brief while and we got stuck in.

The base was Good of course. Toppings wise, well we could live with Mushrooms, tomato and onion. Artichoke and olives would not be top of our list, but it worked together pretty well. Our problem was with the fake mozzarella, it was to our taste a bit Grim. I suppose we could get used to it, but it didn’t float our boats. Ted said it had a funny twang. Luckily the Garlic oil hid some of the taste. So all in all, not one that we would be getting again. Even the wives didn’t argue with that!

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads if you like that sort of thing…..

BBQ Cheeseburger Pizza from Papa John’s Review

Loaded first, is a generous dollop of our signature BBQ sauce. Then a double helping of spicy beef, pickles, sliced tomatoes, onions and cheese, all on a fresh dough base. It’s the mouth-watering taste of a cheeseburger in every bite!

Papa John’s BBQ Cheeseburger Pizza Review
The lads were passing the local Papa John’s after the missuses had sent us out with a shopping list to pick up some healthy option tasteless food from the supermarket, and Ted noticed the new pizza, the BBQ Cheeseburger.

Wow that’s a real guys pizza, no poncy spinach and pan fried shallot rubbish. So sacking off the shopping chore we went we and ordered one. We were on cloud nine not even caring about what would happen when we didn’t get back with the poncy food they wanted.

Now we would have preferred some chopped up beef patties of the Maccy D variety, but this was good. All the ingredients of a burger on a pizza. We thought that tomato sauce base might have been better which of course you could have, but we went with the BBQ sauce.

To be honest we could go though the all the ingredients and say this, that and the could have been better but the combination speaks for itself! And it all worked fantastically. Though in true Maccy D style, Bill picked his pickles out and dumped them on the side.

The Pizza Lads say – A thumbs up and a real winner!

We forgot the shopping and we were not popular when we went home. And we don’t care!

Cheese, Ham & Pineapple

Pizza Hut Hawaiian Pizza Review
Well the boys at Pizza Hut really know how to oversell the pizzas, no oozing cheese, succulent pineapple, oven baked farmhouse Ham – type descriptions for them. No just Ham, Pineapple. Still nice sounding descriptions a good pizza does not make!

So Mr Ham and Pineapple, the lads are going to put you to the test! We chose the classic crust and standard cheese and tomato sauce. The base was all nice and good and sauce was as expected and new.

The Ham was good and crispy but perhaps overdone a bit at the edges, but passable. The pineapple was fresh from the tin bill said (only joking) and was, despite the smallish pieces indeed succulent. So we were satisfied just. A uninspiring experience.

Shaved steak, caramelised onions, green peppers & triple Cheese blend on a creamy base.

Pizza Hut Philly Cheese Steak Pizza Review
The lads are always on the lookout for a new pizza and when we scoped the Philly Cheese Steak at our local Pizza Hut we were just going to have to try one. We had a pan base which was crispy around the edges and lovely and soft inside, just how we like it.

The crowning ingredient is the Steak and we were happy with it, but it could have been a little less chewy, however the flavour was spot on. We loved the caramelised onions which set off the tastebuds.

The Green Peppers and the triple Cheese were all good and when put together tasted very indulgent. Creamy base was different and we thought it got a bit lost with all the fantastic flavours going on.

So a thumbs up for this pizza from The Pizza Lads.

Customer Review from Mr Singh

Here is an honest, simple review of my experience with the Philly Cheese Steak Pizza, Deep Crust from Pizza Hut.

I’m a big fan of steak, has to be rare or medium rare at least. Additions must include salt and pepper seasoning with vinegar’s and hot mustard and the cuts have to he premium or thick at least. I ordered mine pizza up north, near Manchester and the results were as follows:

I had my socks knocked off. The pizza was light, thick, crispy and flavoursome. The Steak was thick,  juicy, moist, tender and beefy.  The onion, Philadelphia cheese and tomatoes were a combination from heaven.

I’ve never had anything like this outside of New York / Brooklyn.
Well done Pizza Hut!

Classic Caspian Pizza from MOD Pizza

Classic Caspian Pizza from MOD Pizza Classic Caspian Pizza Review

Classic Caspian Pizza from MOD Pizza Review

Classic Caspian comes with a BBQ sauce base, mozzarella, red onion, grilled chicken, blue cheese & BBQ swirl finish.

The Classic Caspian Pizza Review

The lads had really enjoyed eating at Mod pizza the last time we were dragged to the shopping centre, so when we were told by the missuses that new curtains were critical to our future well-being we remembered that a curtain shop was near to the Mod Pizza outlet.

So suggesting this, it was off to the “Mall” (for our American friends) . We managed to slip away in the curtain shop fairly easily and headed to Mod Pizza. We studied the menu and the Caspian looked good.

The pizza arrived pretty quickly and it looked splendid. The base was a double crust and man it was good. Bill said that they must make the dough instore? Anyway, topping wise the BBQ sauce was tangy and the mixture of Blue Cheese and Mozza was a revelation. The Blue Cheese was strong and powerful and the Chicken was nicely grilled and tender. Our only complaint was that the BBQ swirl on top was a step in the overkill direction, however we realised that it was just for show. So all in all a top rated pizza.

The ladies were still studying curtains when we slipped back and I don’t think we were missed at all. Could’ve had a second helping! Oh well…

A great thumbs up from The Pizza Lads….

Paprika pulled chicken, roquito® chilli peppers, red onions & mixed peppers.

Pizza Hut New Orleans Cajun Sizzler Pizza Review
The lads were feeling cold as the winter dragged on, Ted’s suggestion to his wife that they cuddle in bed to keep warm was met with a stony silence, so a quick call to Bill and they were off to Pizza Hut.

The eye catching item on the menu was the New Orleans Cajun Sizzler as it looked so different with the Cheesy Garlic bites around the edge. The base was super thin and we commented how nice is was. The Pulled chicken was spicy and tender so no complaints there. The trademarked roquito® chilli peppers were slightly different to the run of the mill variety, but no great shakes to our mind and the onions and peppers joined the party to set things off a treat.

We enjoyed it but to be honest the base was the standout and we shall be sampling that again soon I suspect!

All The Meats Pizza from Papa John’s Review

All the Meats™ Papa John’s fans have voted this their all time number one pizza. Is it the piquant Pepperoni, succulent Sausage or crispy Bacon that we stack on this super meaty pizza that makes it so popular? Or is it the sizzling spicy Beef, chunky Ham and fresh Mozzarella Cheese? Let your taste buds decide.

Papa John’s All The Meats Pizza Review
The lads were scanning the Papa John’s menu and noticed that the All The Meats pizza was voted number one by “fans”. Well we thought we have never tried one for some reason and decided to put this to rights straight away.

Slipping out while the wives were watching some soap or other on the Gogglebox, we were there in no time. So we ordered a deep crust base after seeing what was for tea before we left home and tucked in.

It was meaty for sure and Ted thought the combination of pork and beef was a bit not to his taste. However he was soon a convert and to be fair it’s definitely the pork toppings that prevail. The Sausage and Bacon were fantastic, but felt the Ham was a bit overpowered by the spicy Beef and Pepperoni. Having said that it was a good one. We have to say not our favourite but a good 8/10 from us.

Lucy Sunshine Pizza from MOD Pizzas Review

Classic Lucy Sunshine comes with Garlic, Mozzarella, Artichokes, Parmesan & Red sauce dollop finish.

The Lucy Sunshine Pizza Review

The lads had heard of a new pizza chain opening in the UK and although they don’t have many branches at the moment we happened to come across one. The missuses had decided to hit the January sales to buy more clothes that despite being raved to us over when purchased (we’ve learned to pretend interest), we guarantee we will never see the item again and if we happen to remember it later we will be told that it A) wasn’t liked B) has been taken to a charity shop.

Anyway as the designated drivers we had to tag along and lose ourselves in the shopping centre. So here we were at Mod Pizza and it promised to be a real treat, a quirky take on the Mod movement that somehow fits in well with pizzas. We went for the Lucy Sunshine as Lucy was Teds first girlfriends name so that seemed a good omen. It was a sparse looking pizza and the toppings seemed a bit mean but as we have said before, dollops of toppings a good pizza does not make! And although Bill was a bit unsure about the artichokes it somehow all worked fantastically.

The base was a standard crust and it was lovely, Soft and crispy with hand made look. The cheese was awesome and the red sauce was so different that we would have it for breakfast if we could. Now the toppings can be totally modded which we didn’t do this time, so beware Mod Pizza, next time we go were taking full advantage.

An amazing new pizza outlet that you must try, A big thumbs up from The Pizza Lads!

Oh you think that’s the best coat you have ever had (i’ll try to remember lol)

The Meaty One from Pizza Hut Review

Pepperoni, Spicy Pork, Seasoned Minced Beef, Smoked Bacon, Chicken

Pizza Hut The Meaty One Pizza Review
The lads have been hard at work eating pizzas and reviewing how good they are for a while now and it’s looking like we are becoming the Internet’s number one independent pizza review site. We don’t our orders for from some faceless corporate marketing department so our reviews can be trusted. Anyway enough of the bigging ourselves up, lets go to pizza hut and big ourselves up some more.

We hadn’t tried the The Meaty One yet so it’s was an obvious choice. We thought we would try a new base offering, the “Large Five Cheese” Stuffed with Mozzarella, Edam, Red Leicester, Gouda & Vintage Cheddar topped with an Emmental crust sprinkle. Wow it was cheesier than a pair of last weeks socks the missuses hadn’t got round to washing yet.

The toppings are Pepperoni, Spicy Pork, Seasoned Minced Beef, Crispy Bacon, Chicken. Now this is a cheese / meat blow out. It was lovely to be honest apart from the minced beef which seemed a bit chewy, however it didn’t spoil it. So overall a winner and the five cheese base will be featuring more in future.

A thumbs up from The Pizza Lads

Hot Pepper Passion Pizza from Papa John’s Review

Four different peppers on a pizza? Now that’s a real passion for peppers. Trust Papa John to load a pizza with colourful red and green peppers, fiery green chilli peppers, spicy jalapeno peppers and finally… freshly sliced onions. This pizza is not called hot for nothing.

Papa John’s Hot Peppers Passion Pizza Review
Now our other halves had been droning on about turning veggie for a while. We had no idea why but reckon it must have been something that they had heard said on the “Loose Woman” TV show about detoxing the bowels or something (never before had the show been more aptly named.. ha ha)

Anyway we had been brainwashed so when we stumbled zombiefied into Papa John’s, the only thought we had was veggie pizza. The hot pepper passion caught our eye and it sounded good. We went with medium deep crust on this occasion, the base was all great, a nice crispy crust and soft inside. The cheese / sauce checked out.

The pizza overall had a mighty kick to it and the chillies and jalapenos really set us on fire and the peppers and onions didn’t put it out! Nothing too much to go wrong with these toppings, they were juicy and cooked well. All in all we liked it, but beware if you are not used to hot chillies etc.
