Carbonara Pizza from Pizza Express Review

Pancetta, Mozzarella and Garlic oil on a Béchamel base, baked with a free-range Egg and finished with grated Gran Milano cheese and fresh parsley on a Romana base

Pizza Express Carbonara Pizza Review The lads had come into some money, searching down the back of the sofa they had found enough for a treat. Pizza Express here we come! So off we went and had a scan of the menu, now you may know we are suckers for new pizza offerings and the picture of a what looked like a fried egg on top of a pizza really got our juices going.

We had no option but to give this a road test… The pizza turned up and was well cooked and hot, although we felt the toppings were a bit thinly applied. The base was the Romana, which has a rustic look to it, and topped with a Béchamel sauce, which we found to be a pleasant change to Tomato. It was rich and creamy, though the flavour was a little under-pronounced for our taste. The Mozzarella and Garlic oil was pretty standard fare, but nice and added to the genuine Italian style feel. It came with grated Gran Milano Cheese which really kicked up the taste rating and subtle hints of Parsley were evident.

We had eaten all around and left the egg till last. Of course it wasn’t really fried despite it’s appearance but baked. Now baking eggs makes them a little rubbery and this was no exception, taste was OK. To be honest if they had stuck a fresh fried egg on it after cooking we would have been in heaven! So overall we are always pleased with new combos and this one was very interesting, commendable especially for the Béchamel sauce.

Our classic base, topped with pepperoni, creamy mozzarella & our famous passata

Sold at the Morrisons supermarket not the restaurant chain Pizza Express American Supermarket Pizza Review

The lads were still trying to tighten belts and cut back and economise. Bill had seen that Pizza Express do a supermarket cook at home pizza which promises the restaurant experience for less. So we felt that we had to try this out… Ted reckoned it couldn’t deliver as promised, as it wouldn’t be as fresh and the cooking process in our old gas oven is hardly the same.

So anyway we got ours from Morrison’s for about three pounds and we cracked it open at home and Ted threw away the box with instructions on before we had read them! Not wanting to go hunting in the bin we found the good people at Morrison’s helpfully list these on their website. The following including the spelling mistakes is genuinely on the site as below:

These are guidelines only as all cooking appliances vary in performance;

Oven cook – From Chilled. Cook It the Pizza Express way

1. The first step to pizza heaven is a pipping hot oven.
2. Get rid of all the packaging and even out the toppings. If you’re feeling creative, add some of your own.
3. Drizzle a little olive oil over you pizza to give it a crispier finish.
4. Place your puzaa directly onto the top shelf of your pre-heated oven.
5. Cook in line with the timings below. You’ll know it’s done when the cheese is golden brown and the base is crispy.
6. Remove carefully and serve it fresh out the oven (just like we do). Enjoy!
P.S. If there’s any leftover, please don’t reheat it, it’s nicer cold. Fan 200°C 9-11 mins / 220°C 9-11 mins / Gas 7 9-11 mins; Oven cook – From Frozen.

Cook It the Pizza Express way” So when the oven was “pipping hot” , we placed the “puzaa” in and cooked….lol.. But we are losing the plot so onto the pizza. It looked OK with a decent amount of toppings. The base was was fairly crispy but had overcooked a bit around the edges but not too bad. The Passata sauce was reasonable and had an indulgent taste. Cheese was very cheesy and had melted all over evenly.

The Pepperoni was a bit greasy and had created a pool of meaty grease in the centre of the Pizza, but after a couple of bites seemed pleasant. We had drizzled olive oil over as instructed and that had added a fresher taste. We could taste hints of Oregano, Black Pepper, Basil and White Pepper. The overall pizza was in our opinion not as nice as the restaurant offering and really seemed little different to other supermarket branded ones.

But it was Okay – A side way thumbs from The Pizza Lads

Generously topped with rich tomato sauce, and mounds of meltingly moreish mozzarella

Cheese Meltdown Pizza Review

The lads were being dragged around the local Asda by the missuses and while they were deciding on which of the latest balm covered scented toilet roll brands to go for, we disappeared down the next aisle when they weren’t looking.

After a brief search we found the chilled pizza cabinet and took shopping matters into our own hands. A wide variety of choice was available but as we had to get them to pay for it (with our money) we decided to go a bit plain.

The one that sprung to our attention was the Cheese Meltdown. Sticking it in the trolley under a multipack of crisps we made our way back to the wives and the bog rolls. They seemed to have settled upon an Almond scented variety.

Anyway Bill managed to get the pizza on the till belt under the crisps still and while they were chatting and the cashier rung it up and we got it in the trolley before they realized. We volunteered to unpack when we got home and got it in the fridge. They say possession is nine tenths of he law, so when it was discovered later we took the heat and got away with it.

They were due to go out so we had the pizza all to ourselves.

We heated it up according to the instructions. The base was not to thin, not too thick and quite pleasant and crispy. The Tomato sauce was rich and fairly generous, taste wise not too bad. Onto the topping, which is cheese believe it or not, there was round slices on mozzarella and a sort of cheddar / mozzarella grated mix. It had gone reasonably brown and looked appetizing. The cheese was also generous topped and tasted lovely.

All in all a decent basic pizza if not life changing.

Oh by the way the lotion covered almond scented toilet rolls were marvelous.

Spicy Chicken Burger Pizza from Papa John’s Review

It begins with a tongue tingling combo of our sweet Californian Tomato sauce and hot Buffalo sauce. Above that you’ll find crispy Piri Piri Chicken poppers along with fresh Red Peppers and sliced Red Onion. Lastly, a final flourish of Green Serenade Chillies for an extra wave of aromatic heat for that added kick.

Papa John’s Spicy Chicken Burger Pizza Review
The Missuses were given us poor Pizza lads a hard time over the amount of Pizzas we were consuming and said we would end up looking like one. We pleaded our case that we had to eat Pizzas so all our followers know what to go for! But the law was laid down and we were told no more Pizzas in the next few days, that was it and they were off for good and “ain’t never coming back”.

Oh man, now we are not good liars, so we really felt like we were knackered. So off we went in a right huff, but passing the local PJ’s, (Papa John’s) we noticed a sign for a Spicy Chicken Burger! Hang on a minute are they branching out into Macd’s territory? Closer inspection revealed it was a Pizza, so Ted said “well we can Green Serenade Chillies Green Serenade Chilliessay in all honesty we had a burger”, so only a white lie if questioned by the wives! That was good enough for us…

So anyway were losing the plot here, onto the pizza review. We decided upon the standard base which was as usual up to par and crispy round the edges. The toppings seemed a bit sparse though to look at. The sweet Californian Tomato sauce and hot Buffalo sauce was an inspired mixture and really sets the taste buds going.

Cheese was all over and melty thick. The crispy Piri Piri Chicken poppers were a bit unusual and Bill wasn’t keen on the crispiness, but they had a real kicking taste. It was rounded off with fresh Red Peppers and sliced Red Onion. But the explosion of heat came from the Green Serenade Chillies. So a good and different combo though were not too sure about the Burger name on it. Oh well, when we got back and faced the third degree we said we had had a burger and brownie points all round for the lads.

The Tune Thunder Pizza Review

The lads were on their travels again to the big smoke (London for all non UK followers), we had heard through the pizza underground grapevine (actually Ted found them on the internet, but hey it doesn’t sound as good does it!). So the underground, darkweb, word of mouth, need to know, Mums the word grapevine informed us that a chain called Pizza Go GO was the place to be.

So the lads needed no more prompting and were ready for an early start and Ted told the missus to “wake me up before you go go, cos I’m going to Pizza go go”. Wham sang something like that and wham was also the sound of Teds wife smacking him around the Mooey (face to non UKer’s) ,

Anyway we are losing the plot now, off we went and after getting lost in London eventually found this oasis of pizza dreams. We were in the mood for something different, and scanning the menu most of it seemed pretty standard till we saw the Tuna Thunder. Wow that sounded awesome and Bill wondered if the Thunder part comes later on .?

On to the pizza, we just had the Standard Pizza base which we felt could have been a bit crispier, but it was reasonable and fresh. The toppings were nicely arranged and consisted of Tuna, Fresh Tomato, Fresh Garlic & Green Chillies. The Tuna was in little chunks and was tasty but not mind blowing. The Tomato was sweet and tangy and the Green Chillies were kicking. We felt Tuna and Chilli to be an odd choice but it worked. All rounded off with fresh Garlic which the Missuses always appreciate.

So all in all, we were happy if not blown away. By the way the Thunder part does seem to happen later!

Stonebaked Pepperoni Pizza from Sainsbury’s Review

A 10 inch hand stretched stonebaked Pizza base made with Extra Virgin Olive oil, topped with Tomato and Basil sauce, Mozzarella and Cheddar Cheeses, sliced Pepperoni and confit Onion

The Stonebaked Pepperoni Pizza Review

The lads had been told to cut back on Pizza spending by the Missuses. We said, well how can we produce the reviews that the public demand, if we don’t try them? Seeing our distress they agreed that we could economise a bit and eat supermarket ones for a few weeks. So dodging the bullet once again we trooped off to Sainsbury’s to see the offerings. Now we are not superkeen on frozen Pizzas so we opted for a chilled one. Lots of choice was on offer but Bill felt a bit Pepperoniy so we grabbed one and set off home again.

The Pizza looks good with big slices of Pepperoni and lots of Onions. Starting with the stonebaked base we felt it was a bit soggy, the copious amount of Onions and grease seemed to have seeped into the base. The taste wasn’t horrendous but to be honest it sucked overall.

The Tomato sauce had a nice hint of Basil and was acceptable, the cheese was OK, but some more would have been nice. The pepperoni was very greasy we reckoned and not the best tasting, and it was drowned in sweet soggy Onions which left an after taste.

So not a great example of a Sainsbury’s Pizza as we had had others in the past which had rivalled restaurant offerings. Sainsbury’s we suggest dropping this one (in the bin)

BBQ Americano Pizza from Pizza Hut Review

A smoky BBQ sauce, Chicken breast, Bacon & Sweetcorn with a BBQ drizzle.

Pizza Hut The BBQ Americano Pizza Review
The lads had had a meeting and decided to redouble the efforts they are putting into bringing you the best pizza reviews on the interweb.

The summer was fading fast now and Christmas is round the corner and it was touch and go if our marriages would last that long. At the meeting it was decided that our mission was to review every Pizza available from every Pizza chain and supermarket in the UK. Wow was it possible, would we die before the end? Anyway enough waffle, we scouted a few menus to discover Pizzas we hadn’t reviewed yet. The first one Bill saw was the Pizza Hut – BBQ AMERICANO.

Off we went and settled down for the feast to follow. The base we chose was the ALL AMERICAN THIN which I said would go well with AMERICANO inspired toppings. It says on the menu that they have been hand stretching these since 1958! and to be honest we wondered if this was the original one they had started with. It was far too tough for our delicate palate. We suspected it had been cooked a little too much. So a lot of ground to be made up after this bad start. Happily things got a little better from there on.

The sauce was the Smoky BBQ which was tasty but we felt that too much had been drizzled over the top so it became a bit overpowering. It was passable. The Chicken was nice and was a lovely colour (or color should we say as we are all Americanised now) and it was succulent and fresh . What else, the Bacon was reasonable if a little thin on the ground and all rounded off with Sweetcorn, which is not our favourite topping. All in all we didn’t feel this Pizza hit the mark. So howdy partnering and yee-hawing we made are way.

A stonebaked Pizza base topped with sweet Tomato sauce, Mozzarella full fat soft Cheese and Regato medium fat hard Cheese and basil sauce.

The Stonebaked Margherita Pizza Review

The Pizza Lads had been spending money like it’s going out of fashion on football and Pizza. The missuses were getting a bit angry and as our marriages were on the rocks, so we agreed we had to go on an economy drive as a matter of urgency. Cut backs and belt tightening were the order of the day. So instead of the usual delights from one of our favorite Pizza restaurant’s like Pizza Hut, we had to settle for a supermarket takeaway pizza.

Now were not snobs by any means so as long it’s a pizza that’ll do for us.

Bill said “we ought to start with the most basic one we could find” A classic Stonebaked Margherita it was then. The pizza was duly cooked which is always hit and miss at home as the edges are usually burnt and the middle cold. But using the Lets Cook Pizza Tray we reviewed recently the results were pretty good.

The offering had a reasonable base, the Stonebaked base was a little dry but not to chewy and had crisped nicely underneath. The Mozzarella full fat soft Cheese and Regato were a decent mix and seemed to have been generously piled on. The sweet Tomato and Basil sauce added a nice tangy kick which lifted the whole taste. Not much more to say really but sometimes the most basic Pizza can be awesome and we felt this like lacked some herbs to give it a more indulgent combo.

Did it match the pizza chains ones?
We have to say it was close and as for the price, we were happy and so were the wives. Marriage saved for now …

The Chicken Tops Pizza Review

The Lads were off to follow their football team down south again, so we made a point of looking for a Tops Pizza restaurant after we had a good experience before. The missuses were getting fed up with us disappearing all the time and our marriages were hanging by a thread. But as Bill always says “if they don’t like it, they know what they do”. With these words of wisdom guiding our actions we were off out the door (never knowing if we were going to get back in!).

Anyway enough personal stuff, we arrived early for the game and located the Tops Pizza branch. Ted was to make the Pizza choice as he had won the coin toss. He decided to go for the Chicken Tops on a Hot Dog Crust base. I’ll let him have this one, as we normally just have a plain base so we can judge the toppings better.

So pizza arrived freshly cooked and looking lovely, the Hot Dog Crust was pretty OK as it provided a nice contrast with the Chicken, it sometimes doesn’t work with very meat intensive toppings. The special Tomato sauce was rich and full of flavour. The Chicken pieces were small but tasty and tender and contrasted with the sweet and tender Sweetcorn. Finished off with a good helping of Mushrooms and Green Pepper. A perfect Chicken Pizza experience. We were on cloud nine until we went and lost at the football and the thought of the nagging we were going to face when we returned home. Back to reality…

Tops mozzarella cheese, Special tomato sauce, Peri Peri Chicken, Chorizo, Roquito Peppers, Red Onions & Fresh Tomato

The Peri Peri Lover Pizza Review

The Tops Pizza Chain was a new one to the lads as Midland based dudes as it’s based mainly down in London and the south.

We had been allowed by the missuses to go and watch a footie match down in London and hey were out and about so Pizza before the game was a must. So we spotted a Tops Pizza outlet and we were in our zone. So how would it compare to the larger chains? Here goes…

We choose the Peri Peri Lover on a deep pan base. The base was excellent and tasted really fresh and had just the right amount of crispy and chewiness. The special tomato sauce was rich and thick and had a tangy taste. The main act was of course the Peri Peri Chicken and we have to say it was Nando quality in our opinion, tender and had a real kick to it. The Chorizo always goes well with chicken and gives a lovely contrast. Forgot to mention the Cheese which was nothing out the ordinary but good. The Peppers and Onions added indulged the flavour of the Chicken. Finally there was a good helping of fresh Tomato, chunky and fresh and really topped things off a treat.

So is Tops The Tops? It was excellent and we really hope they expand across the UK , but next time we see one we shall visit without a doubt.

5 stars and a massive thumbs up from The Pizza Lads

Great British BBQ Pizza from Papa John’s Review

Make it a British summer to savour with this BBQ sensation, which is first loaded with our signature BBQ sauce, then topped with prime cuts of slow cooked, marinated BBQ beef, which is torn into rustic shreds and mixed with a sweet & sticky Old Kentucky whiskey glaze, juicy chargrilled chicken, spicy beef, pork sausage & onions.

Papa John’s Great British BBQ Pizza Review
The lads and the missuses were enjoying the lovely summer weather, but Bills wife decided that the BBQ had to fired up so that they could get out of cooking no doubt. Anyway me and Bill were not too happy about this. All the work and waiting about and expense of the burgers and stuff. So we remembered that Papa John’s were offering a new Great British BBQ Pizza. To all round groans from the wives they eventually gave in so we headed own to Papas John’s.

The Base we choose was the thin crust XXL so enough for all (especially us). The base is decent, not too crusty though a bit floppy to the size (we know the feeling !).

A good coating of BBQ sauce which we prefer to tomato on meaty offerings. It was fairly sweet but tangy, so all good. The pulled beef was indeed tender as promised and mixed with a sweet & sticky Old Kentucky whiskey glaze, which was really good. The whiskey taste wasn’t strong but gave the beef a deep luxurious flavour. The Chicken was moist and and full of flavour. Spicy beef was something we wouldn’t have added as it didn’t add much to the overall taste.

Finally the pork sausage & onions gave a nice contrast to the pizza and the onions seemed to take away a bit of the sweetness. So all very nice and work free for us. Was it better than a real BBQ? We thought it was a good try, however the wives were not as pleased, but hey they didn’t eat much, so all the more for us! Winner Winner BBQ dinner.

Margherita Bufala from Pizza Express

Margherita Bufala from Pizza Express Review

Buffalo mozzarella, tomato, fresh basil, fresh tomato, garlic oil, and oregano, finished with fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil.

Carbonara Pizza Review The Margherita Pizza Review
The lads are always intrigued by the strange sounding names that pizza express gives to the Pizzas, usually they are fairly standard in a way, but sound more exotic and perhaps justify the higher price point.

Now we are fans of Pizza Express offerings in general, so we decided to throw caution to the wind and pick a odd sounding one on our visit with looking at the picture or ingredients. So Ted took the lead and closed his eyes a bit and settled on the Margherita Bufala. Cool whats Bufala? Sounds like an insult from Bills misses! So ordering said Pizza and checking Google we discovered that its Italian for Buffalo Mozzarella or “Mozzarella di Bufala”.

Another mystery solved but hey we could have guessed from the ingredients. It turned up promptly and to be honest, looked like it had been left out in the garden on a windy day and leaves had landed all over it. So on to the base – all good and a nice texture and well cooked without being hard. The Cheese was decent and spiced up with fresh Basil, Garlic oil, and Oregano. We thought the Oregano was a bit overdone and took over a bit.

The Tomatoes were small and sharp and we would have preferred big slices of Beef Tomatoes. To be honest we were not big fans of the leaves either. They were a bit chewy for our liking. So all in all, not the best Pizza we have ever had.

It was OK but not something the we would rush back for. The Pizza Lads…

Discover Pizza that’s a long way away from the same-old, same-old. We’ve taken our famous favourites, and remastered them with a premium flavour boost. Triple Cheese, Pepperoni & Chorizo.

Pizza Hut The Epic Pepperoni Pizza Review
It’s hot hot hot, the summer grinds on and tempers were frayed. The lads and the missuses were fighting like cats and dogs all the time. Ted was Googling to find out how dudes in hot countries kept cool and it seems they eat hot spicy food, we mentioned this to the wives and they virtually threw us out the door to “cool down” at the local Pizza Hut. Yo-Hoo, we had permission to indulge ourselves.

So off we went to scan the menu, Ted hadn’t had much Pepperoni lately and we agreed that the Epic Pepperoni Pizza was going to fit the bill. Duly served up fresh we opted for the pan base with is deep with crispy edges and a fluffy insides. Tomato sauce check. Triple Cheese which are Mozzarella, Monterey Jack and Red Leicester, this is a good combination and we particularly like the Monterey Jack which adds an indulgent twist.

The pepperoni and Chorizo gave us the spice and heat we needed to “cool down”. The Chorizo had a great texture as well, so a great traditional combo with a twist to lift it out from the ordinary and it looked great to be honest. Perhaps we should have gone for a more spicy option really but it was just enough. Right, back home for more fun and games!

Chicken Breast Strips, Cajun Seasoning, Red Onions & Pepper Pearls for a hot & sweet kick, served with our exclusive Chilli Oil.

Domino’s Sicilia Pizza Review
The lads had a succession of very meaty based Pizzas of late and to be honest we felt like we needed a change. Veggie Pizzas are all good but Chicken really hits the mark. Scanning our menus we settled upon the Sicilia from Domino’s Pizza. It’s part of the Italiano range which is a thinner, hand-stretched base which we think is a bit tougher and chewy than the standard. However this is the more authentic taste.

Usual decent cheese and tomato base. On to the toppings, Chicken breast, it’s got Cajun spices, it’s got pepper pearls and red onions. The Chicken breast was juicy and tender and the Cajun spices added a kick. The pepper pearls were not too hot really and worked very well. The lads felt that some mushrooms would have set things off a bit more, but we only review the standard menu items as they will be served to you.

Finocchiona, Coppa, Milano Salami, Pancetta, Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella, finished with rocket and shaved Gran Milano Cheese on a classic base.

The Quattro Carni Pizza Review The lads were intrigued by the Pizza Express menu the last time we visited as the toppings seemed to have unusual names, last time it was Barbacoa. We also happened to notice the Quattro Carni Pizza which has Finocchiona and Coppa! We had no idea so vowed to come back and try it.

So giving the missuses the slip one day we found the opportunity. We had decided to Google these mystery toppings before we left and we discovered that Finocchiona is Pork Salami. Right OK, Coppa is Pork Collar! We like different, so we went for it. The pizza base was good and tasty as usual but would all the Pork’s work together? We are pleased to report that the combo was a real treat with subtle differences between the various types.

The Finocchiona has the taste of Fennel seeds, produce an intriguing sweet, anise flavor. The Coppa was quite fatty but tender. Milano Salami and Pancetta added to overall effect. Finished with rocket and shaved Gran Milano cheese to give a fresh summer looking appearance.

A decent option for Pork loving Pizza fans and a thumbs up from The Pizza Lads…
